How to Ride a Bicycle With Your Dog
If you love dogs and love to bicycle, here are some ways you can bicycle next to, in front of, behind, over, or under your dog.
[edit] Steps
- Hold the leash very loosely. Do not use the loop strap. If there is a parting of ways, the leash can be released easily without pulling the bike over.
- Teach commands like "Whoa" and "Turning" so that you can anticipate the motions of the bicycle.
- Practice together in short intervals, with lots of praise.
[edit] Tips
- Never have your dog run faster than a trot.
- Work up to longer distances. Your dogs foot pads are tender and can shred. It takes a little time for them to toughen up. Start with a 1/4 mile and gradually add distance.
- When you are first starting out, hold your arm straight out and use a short lead, so that your dog is positioned in the correct place for heeling with a bike. Ideally, this just to the right of the saddle with the nose parallel to the pedal. You don't want the dog too far ahead, causing him to tangle with the front wheel or miss a turning command.
- Some people use a BikerDog attachment system that allows the dog to run alongside the bike, without being able to get loose or pull the bike over.
- This can be hard to do.
- Have you pup do his potty business before you go for your ride.
[edit] Warnings
- Bicycling with dogs may be dangerous. Pay attention to your safety and other bike riders. Be sure your dog is well trained with voice commands.
