How to Quit Drinking Alcohol
If you feel that you drink too much, these steps may help you quit drinking.
[edit] Steps
- Do not buy groceries and alcohol at the same time.
- Pick a day on which to drink (this means don't have a beer or a shot or get buzzed in between). If it helps, privately write down how you felt all week until your first drink.
- On your designated day, before you drink, or get ready to go out (you might have to really, consciously put effort into this): read/remember how you felt all week, the highs and lows.
[edit] Tips
- Keep chocolate handy. Chocolate cravings are typical when problem drinkers quit. It will increase your endorphins and help reduce the urges you will feel.
- Why alcohol is taking over your life is a question that will only be answered when you DON'T let it take over your life.
[edit] Warnings
- Don't cut way down right away, or you may go on a drinking binge.
- The booze has your life, and will fight to keep it.
- A chronic alcoholic who quits all at once can be at major risk for health related issues. Abruptly stopping many CNS depressants can lead to something called "delirium tremens". Within a few days of going "cold turkey" withdrawl symptoms can progress to tonic clonic seizures and eventually status epilepticus. This can be fatal. If you are a chronic heavy drinker, before going cold turkey consult with your physician. They may be able to give you something (i.e. a BENZODIAZEPINE) along with a program to help cope with the acute withdrawl symptoms.
