How to Make a Dog Love You
Your girlfriend has a dog, but you've never really been a dog person, and haven't a clue how to get the dog to like you. Your family has a dog but you really don't "get" what the dog wants. Well, read on for these simple tips towards gaining a dog's favor! Bring treats!
[edit] Steps
- Observe the dog for a while. How does it act when it wants to play? When it's hungry? When it wants cuddles? Understanding what the dog wants is a great first step in being more responsive to the dog's needs, and as such will make him or her like you better.
- Petting is a good way to start. But observe signs that the dog is done with being petted. Many dogs won't let you pet them when they want to play, so play with them instead!
- The fastest way to a canine's heart is through their stomach. Soft treats that give off a strong meat scent are usually a great way to get attention. If the dog is trained get him or her to sit, or lie down, or stay before giving the treat. This leads to the next step. Remember, if the dog isn't your own, always ask permission to feed the dog from their owner!
- Consider training the dog to heel, or teach it simple tricks. You not only get to use food rewards while training, dogs love to have bonding time with people. If you don't know to train your dog, consult a dog trainer, or someone else who has an exceptionally well behaved or well trained dog.
- Don't neglect daily chores. Feeding is an obvious one; but take a few minutes out of your day to brush your dog. He'll benefit from the daily attention, and his coat will be healthier too!
- Walkies! Dogs love to be walked. It will make it much less of a chore on you if you learn how to teach the dog to heel properly without pulling you over or tripping you.
- Respect your dog's space. Don't always be smothering the dog, or he may begin to avoid you. Every animal needs some time to not be bothered, so respect his space and he'll enjoy the time around you more!
[edit] Tips
- Avoid hitting your dog. Usually a shouted "NO!" followed by a loud clap is enough to stop them from doing what they are doing.
- Dogs enjoy being talked to. It's more about the tone of your voice than what you're saying, but it's another often-overlooked way to interact with your dog. Talk in a happy tone when you're playing, or a soothing tone when you're petting him or her. This is also helpful when you're trying to get him or her to be happy and bouncy while playing, or trying to get your dog to calm down.
[edit] Warnings
- If you must shout "No" followed by a hand clap for more emphasis to discourage bad behavior, try to get the dog to do something you approve of, then praise them afterwards. Shouting tirades are not effective with dogs, and will just make them frightened and confused.
