How to Make a 7 Volt Casefan Line

Sick of having your computer sound like a 767 taking off? Don't want to shell out a lot of money for a fan controller? Well, read on.

[edit] Steps

  1. Firstly, make sure you have a molex splitter, a biro that you can remove the ink from, and some pliers.
  2. Looking at the male end of your molex splitter (you did get a male-female-female cable right?) the red cable is the +5v line, the yellow is the +12v line, and the black are the ground lines.
  3. Depin the +5v (red) and both of the grounds (black cables). To do this, take the ink out of your biro, and slide the hollow end over the pin. This will compress the barbs, and you should hopefully be able to pull the pins out.
  4. Take the black wire closest to the yellow, and put it where the red wire was.
  5. Cut free the red and remaining black wire at the female plugs.
  6. Plug the cable into your PSU, and plug the fans into the female ends.

[edit] Tips

  • If you have a molex depinning tool, feel free to use that. It makes things much easier.

[edit] Warnings

  • This isn't recommended for systems running dual power supplies, or those with more than a dozen fans.
