How to Make Salad Croutons

Do you love Caesar salads but hate the calories? Yahoo! Health called a Caesar salad "one of the worst foods, because it looks healthy but adds loads of unwanted calories". On a diet, but still want to enjoy a Caesar? Here's the recipe you've been looking for!

Croutons are easy to make!
Croutons are easy to make!

[edit] Steps

  1. Put some time into this. Our healthy Caesar is going to take a little more time to prepare than a traditional salad.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  3. Grab a small baking sheet and 2-3 slices of Italian bread. This is the base for your croutons.
  4. Get a sharp knife (or ask mom or dad for some help!) and cut the bread to one inch by one inch squares. Place your squares on the baking sheet.
  5. Drizzle the squares in vinegar, once you have enough (white distilled vinegar works best). Don't use too much or your croutons may become soggy.
  6. Place a small amount of garlic onto the vinegar-soaked bread squares.
  7. Bake the squares until a golden brown to a dark brown. I leave mine in for about 15 minutes because I like my croutons dark and crunchy.
  8. Get a large mixing bowl. Place about 3 cups of lettuce in the bowl. A salad mix containing radishes and carrots are fine, too.
  9. When the croutons are cool, mix them into the bowl, too.
  10. Add about 1/4 cup of Parmesan cheese to the bowl and mix well.
  11. Add two teaspoons of vinegar (optional) and mix well. Bon appetite!

[edit] Tips

  • Don't let the finished product sit on the counter. Leave it in the refrigerator so the croutons don't get stale!

[edit] Warnings

  • Ask mom or dad to use the knife and the stove. You don't want to end up in the hospital!
