How to Make Pueblo Feast Day Cookies

Pueblo Day Feast Cookies fall into the category of Native American foods. They are served during feast days and for celebrations.


[edit] Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 4 cups white flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups lard
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup water, up to 1 cup total
  • 1 cup pinon nuts, shelled

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Combine dry ingredients except sugar and the nuts.
  3. In another bowl cream the lard and sugar.
  4. Add the dry ingredients to the lard mixture.
  5. Slowly add enough water to make a soft dough. The dough should not be sticky.
  6. Add the nuts.
  7. Roll out dough 1/2-inch thick.
  8. Cut out cookies in desired shapes.
  9. Dip in cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  10. Bake until crisp.

  • Combine cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl. Some folks like it spicy others do not.
  • Make extra cinnamon-sugar for toast. Yummy!
