All in all it depends on where you are. If you're in the car, on a plane, or on a trip, the life can only be lengthened for about 5 minutes. If you're at home, recharging is simple. (this is also assuming you're talking about AA batteries).

[edit] Steps

  1. Take the batteries out of the socket.
  2. Place the batteries between your hands.
  3. Rub your hands together as if you were warming them on a snowy day. Almost any chemical reaction proceeds faster when warmer.
  4. Place the batteries back in the socket.

[edit] Tips

  • If you're at home, placing them in the refrigerator is supposed to help, and sometimes it does.
  • Storing the batteries in the fridge will help lengthen the shelf life, and thus their life when you finally use them.
  • It is best to replace older rechargeable Ni/Cd batteries as their ability to store electrical energy decreases with age and use.

[edit] Warnings

  • Do not install a battery backwards as hydrogen can build and damage can result (newer batteries have vents to prevent this).
  • Do not leave a battery in a device if you do not intend to use it for an extended amount of time as the battery could leak and cause damage to the device (best to lose only a battery than the entire device).
