How to Improve a Film Script

Is there a movie you hate? Do you have "cranky animosity" toward the people who made it? If so, it's time to get your pen out and make a movie as good as that was bad. And this article will show you how!

[edit] Steps

  1. Ask for permission to revise the script.
  2. Obtain a script of the original movie, or copy it down yourself.
  3. Write your script while looking at the original simultaneously. As you go, make improvements to every little thing you think is bad.
  4. Then go back and revise the heck out of your version until you are completely satisfied with it.

[edit] Tips

  • The movie you're improving should be one that has generally negative reception. I'm doing From Justin to Kelly, which scores under 10% at Rotten Tomatoes, right now. If you're doing a movie with generally favorable reviews, your version might generally be viewed as less than good.

[edit] Warnings

  • Someone rewrote Star Wars Episode I in three different ways, all either revising or eliminating the character of Jar Jar Binks. While this person undoubtedly did us a favor, it was illegal because the person failed to first get permission from George Lucas. Please make sure you ask the makers of the original movie for permission to revise the script before you start doing so, unless you want to end up in prison.

[edit] Things You'll Need

  • A shooting script of the original movie
  • Lots and lots of paper
  • Something to write with (a pen or pencil)
