How to Help Your Teen Deal With the Loss of a Loved One

Any teen may suffer the loss of a loved one once in their lifetime. That loved one can be a family member or a close friend. If your see your teen crying and feeling hurt, here is how to help your teenager cope with any loss.

  1. Make sure your teen doesn't feel that he or she is at fault. Help your teen understand that angry feelings or wishes of hate never, ever cause people to die.
  2. Keep normal routines for your teenager. Allow your teen to share in the family grief process, but encourage your teenager to return to their normal routines.
  3. Allow your teen to talk about the loss with others who are also grieving. Expect your teen to say things that can be very difficult. Also accept your teenagers feelings about the loss.

  • Seek professional help for your teenager if your teen withdraws for an extended period of time. It varies, but always be alert. If your teen experience problems with others and their school performance changes drastically.
