How to Drive in the UK
This wiki guide should help any visitors to the UK out with any driving issues
[edit] Steps
- Remember the obvious. Drive on the left of the road, there's nothing worse than agitating a Brit on the road. That means that your driver's seat is on the RIGHT side of the car.
- If your car is from a country that normally drives on the right side of the road, make any necessary modifications to your headlights to adjust the beam so as to avoid blinding oncoming drivers. Often, there are adhesive or static shields that can be applied to the headlamps. Some cars even have a simple mechanism under the hood for adjusting the beam pattern.
- Check with a local motoring store about any legal requirements for driving your car / truck in the UK as this can vary for different vehicles
- The speed limits on the motorways are 90km/h (56mph) for goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, 100km/h (62mph) for buses and coaches and 110km/h (70mph) for cars [1]
- Last of all, no smuggling - Her Majesty's Customs is Extremely strict about this and your truck full of beer could get you deported, fined or imprisoned.
[edit] Tips
- Be polite:- Forcing your way into a stream of traffic on a road you're turning onto is a complete no-goer!
- Don't use your horn unless it's completely necessary, a peaceful drive is paramount in the UK, especially if achievable in a built-up area
- The Highway Code is the British Equivalent of the DMV's Drivers Handbook
- Flash lights to invite someone to turn out in front of you and lift your hand up as a thank you gesture. Although a universal practice, this is not on the Highway code but could be dangerous if neglected. If you do not thank someone for letting you out, you may unwittingly wind up other drivers and cause extreme aggro.
[edit] Warnings
- Don't plan to drive immediately after a sleepless night on the plane over from the USA (as many people do, apparently, if you read web logs). You will be jetlagged, tired, possibly unfamiliar with a manual gear shift, and unused to driving on the left. You will be a danger to yourself and (more importantly) to others. Be a responsible visitor and save driving until the second day.
