How to Create Your Own Partition with Super Fdisk
What is a partiton? A partition is almost like a folder on the hardrive, used to store your files and settings. An example of a partition is partition C:\, the standard hardrive partition on most computers. Many computers have more than one partition, and this how-to will tell you how to create your own partitions, the free and easy way.
[edit] Steps
- Why would we want to divide out hardrive into partitions and make our own? Its simple, we can allocate as much memory as we want to it, by stretching our the hardrives resources and keep seperate documents and programs in it to organize ourselves. I for one have three partitions, and done it in such away that i have allocated the same amount of memory to all three partitions (50 GB each), and use one to store music, one to store documents and one to store pictures.
- If you want, you could also install seperate operating systems on seperate partitions, but first, you need to decide what file system to use on the partition you are about to make. A file system is a way of organizing files, like on the standard hardrive partition, hardrive C:\ (which contains all the standard important system files, the WINDOWS folder etc), where the file system is organized into groups and subgroups, for example, theres the program files folder group which contains small subgroups, the software folders, or the documents and settings folder which contains all the settings of each user account on the computer system in subgroups for each user account.
- First, download: http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Utilities/Disk_Maintenance_and_Repair_Utilities/Super_Fdisk.html, Super Fdisk partition manager.
- This free software will allow you to easily create, rename or format your own partitions. If your hardrive has a maximum memory (storage capacity) of 100 GB, you can create a second partition and subtract 50GB from your original one and allocate it to your newly created one, thus having 50GB of space on each partition.
- Install the software. As described briefly on installation, do not run any software while using Super Fdisk partition manager, as it could result in software disturbance while it peforms the required tasks at hand. This also includes any applications that may be running in the background, in other words, any other software running in the system tray.
- Open Super Fdisk. On the user bar, you are given many options. Simply click on "Create", to create your own partitions. Once you have done this, follow the Partition wizard and all of its instructions, and create your very own partition in a matter of minutes.
[edit] Tips
- Remember, dont stretch your hardrives resources to the limit! In otherwords, make sure you allocate a sensible amount of memory to each partition you have.
- You can buy external hardrives if you ever need the extra space. It is important that you either set a system restore point before creating or formatting, or renaming a partition incase something goes wrong, or possibly the safest option one could reccommend: back all your files up!
- With Super Fdisk, you can set passwords on your hardrives to keep your files away from prying eyes.
[edit] Warnings
- It is important that you remember never to format important partitions such as partition C:\, which contains all vital system files that Windows requires to run.
- It is also important to remember that you keep backups of partitions incase a corruption, or error of files occurs.
- Do not set a password on partition C:\! It could cause Windows to stop functioning properly. Any folders, files or data you wish to be kept secret should be moved to a newly created partition with a password lock on it.
