How to Create Collaborative Videos on wikiHow Using Kaltura

A collaborative video is a video that you or any other registered contributor to wikiHow can create or edit to add images, videos, and sounds. The Kaltura system enables you to work together with others to create informative videos to enhance our how-to manual. Follow these steps to get started uploading and working with collaborative videos.

Note: We are currently testing video systems to determine how we can best incorporate videos into wikiHow. For this reason, please do not add videos directly to articles at this time. You may add them to the Video namespace or a page in your user namespace, but please don't add them directly into wikiHows. Thanks!

[edit] Steps

  1. Click on the "Upload Video" link in the "Editing Tools" menu.
  2. Then select the "Kaltura Start Page" link at the bottom left of the table.
  3. Fill out a short form about the video and select the size and placement of the widget.
  4. Click on the "Generate Tag" button. Doing this will create the "widget code" for your video. This is the code for the video player that you can add to any wiki page.
  5. Copy the widget code.

  6. Paste the code into the page where you want to add the collaborative video and save the page. Now, anyone can add images, videos and sounds to this video and edit it directly from the player that is created by the widget-code.
  7. Click on "Add to this Video" to begin adding content to your video.

  8. Select the file type of the first files you want to upload by clicking on "Image," "Video," or "Audio." The examples in this guide are for adding and importing videos.
  9. Click on "Browse" to locate the first video you would like to upload. You can select multiple files if you have more than one clip to add to this collaborative video. Once you have selected your video, it will be added to a Kaltura's "Add Video" list.
  10. Click on "Upload!" when all of your clips are ready to be uploaded.

  13. Click "OK" to acknowledge that your videos do not violate Kaltura's Terms of Service. Wait for the "Done!" screen to acknowledge that the process is completed. Once this happens, it will take a few minutes to process your video.
  14. Return to your wikiHow page. Your new Kaltura Video should look something like this:

[edit] Tips

  • Once you have created a Collaborative Video, as described above, you or anyone else can contribute to it and edit it at any time, by clicking on the "add to this video" and "edit this video" buttons below the video player.
  • To create a page in the video namespace, just add "Video:Your Title Here" to the end of this URL: "http://www.wikihow.com" in your browser's address bar and hit enter to be brought to a new page you can open for editing.

[edit] Warnings

  • All video uploads and edits show up in Recent Changes, and are subject to wikiHow's licenses and policies. Do not upload inappropriate content, and do not make bad-faith edits on collaborative videos.
