Find that perfect pencil case. Make sure it's large enough so that it will hold everything you need. Pencil cases with multiple pouches can be ideal due to the fact that they can hold a lot of stuff. If you carry your pencil case in your binder, make sure it's compatible with a three-ring binder. It's also helpful if it has a hole puncher.
Go to your local office supplies/stationery store and get all your necessary materials. Check out your school's supply list for specific needs. Some basics would be pencils, pens, erasers, highlighters, colored pencils, index cards, glue sticks, scissors, and lead/a pencil sharpener (depending on whether or not you use mechanical pencils.)
Other useful items to have would be a small mirror, lipgloss, breath mints/gum, concealer, or paperclips.
Determine which items are absolutely essential and place them in your pencil case. Only use some items sometimes? Leave them in your locker(or desk, if you're in elementry school) or place them in your backpack.
Don't lose your pencil case. Keep it in your binder or backpack at all times.

Remember to put your name on it in Sharpie, Witeout, or any permanent pen of your choice.
A pencil case is not a permanent thing, and you can always get another one. If its too small, don't be shy about saying so.
You can always have 2 pencil cases......one for items used most often, one for items used the least.
If you are a girl and packing your pencil case, in a hidden compartment, you might want to put a pad, if you are old enough.

Pens (most schools would like you to have a blue/black one and a red one)
Erasers
Highliters
Index cards
Glue sticks
Scissors
Colored pencils / crayons / markers (whatever you prefer, depends on your grade level.)
Lead/a pencil sharpener (depends on which type of pencil you use)
Optional:
Lipgloss
Breathmints
Gum
Small mirror
Paper/binder clips
Whatever else you think you need.
