How to Catch a Lizard Without Using Your Hands
Maybe it's the new visitor in your house. Maybe you just want to have a "pet" for a day. Here's how to catch a lizard without touching it.
[edit] Steps
- Locate the lizard. If it is cornered or in some kind of room, it will be easier to catch.
- Silently approach the lizard so you don't scare it. Have a bucket and stick with you.
- Slowly put the bucket in front of it. If it runs away put the bucket in front of it again.
- Softly and very gently touch its back/tail with the stick, so it runs into the bucket. Be very careful not to hurt it or to poke it hard - you are simply directly nudging it to one direction. Once it is in, transfer it to a suitable reptile house if you have one. If you don't, make sure your bucket is tall enough or find one that is tall enough. Or make a makeshift, short-term home from a shoe box or similar box.
- Set your lizard loose or study/draw its picture for a few hours and then release it to freedom outside again.
[edit] Tips
- It is not a good idea to keep lizards from the wild, as they carry diseases and possibly mites etc. See a certified pet store if you wish to keep a lizard as a pet.
[edit] Warnings
- Make sure the type of lizard will not hurt you before you try to catch it. Some lizards have very strong jaw grips and some are poisonous.
- Do not touch the lizard but if for some reason you do, always wash your hands before you touch a lizard and after. Most lizards eat crickets, but you should not keep it for long and let it go soon. Putting a container of water in is good for it to cool down in.
[edit] Things You'll Need
- A bowl/bucket/container that the lizard can not climb out
- A stick or another long object
- A lizard
