How to Care for Gulf Coast Toads
Have you always wanted to know how to take care of your Gulf Coast Toad (Bufo Valleceps)? If so, you have come to the right article! Please continue reading for some tips and suggestions on this topic.
[edit] Steps
- Obtain a gulf coast toad.
- Get all the supplies ready, such as the tank, water dish, crickets, calcium, etc. Make sure you have all supplies ready before you get the toad, because if you leave it in a small container for a long time, it may get stressed and not want to eat for a couple of days.
- For a toad 1-3 in, a 10-20 gallon tank will do. For larger specimens (these guys can grow up to 5 1/2 in!) a 40 gallon breeder will do and IS recommended.
- Buy at least two, since they are very social.
- Purchase real, or artificial, non-toxic plants.
- Make the bed very large, using potting soil (unfertilized).
- Set a shallow water dish inside. Kind of burrow it down it the dirt. An exo terra dish is the best. Make sure there is always clean water available. Change the the water every day.
[edit] Tips
- Always have extra water!
- Keep the insects in the tank plentiful. It might not eat right in front of you, but it does eat at night when the bugs are crawling around.
[edit] Warnings
- Do not grab the toad (or any toad) by the paratoid glands on its back behind the eyes. It might secrete the poison known as bufo toxin, onto your skin. Although it wil not be permantly harmful, except if you swallow it or if it comes in contact with an open cut, wash it off immediately.
- Never let the toad come in contact with any poison, or soap. Soap, if heavily dosed on the toad, might melt right through the skin. Even a light coating might be fatal.
